Are you a feminist who likes watching movies but get’s tired of the same sexist movie tropes? I love movies, mainly older ones, but sometimes the ideas shown get me so angry, I have trouble enjoying the movie. I did a feminist book list which a lot of you said was really helpful. There are also some tv shows included! Anyway, here are some movies that are feminist/activist friendly and are sure to empower.
disclaimer: all movies have problems, so while some of these aren’t the most feminist movies, they feature strong women, positive ideas, and much more.
Gilmore Girls – a personal favorite.
Madam Secretary – another favorite.
Erin Brockovich
Little Women – there’s another movie coming out, but the original with Winnona Ryder is a must, along with the book.
A Little Chaos
Enough – Jennifer Lopez in this movie, kicks butt and it’s one of the best movies I’ve seen.
Hidden Figures
A League of Their Own
Mulan
Legally Blonde – a different type of classic but still a classic. Although some ideas can get misinterpreted, it’s a really fun way to see feminism.
10 Things I Hate About You
Clueless
Mona Lisa Smile
Miss Congeniality
The Spy Who Dumped Me – if you do watch this, pay special attention to Kate Mckinnon’s character.
A year ago I found my favorite podcast, The Bechdel Cast. It’s a podcast that talks about a different movie each episode and how it portrays women and different issues. It showed me things about movies that I hadn’t even noticed. I think it goes without saying that I definitely recommend it.
